The programme offered me not only the chance to learn English but also the chance to make friends and learn this country's culture.

LINC mentor programme

The LINC (Living in a new culture) mentor programme is a free two-week programme for new international students.

You will be matched with a British student who will introduce you to living in a new culture at the University of Bath.

Each mentor has a group of up to 4-6 mentees.

Why should I apply?

  • make British friends
  • learn about life, studying and shopping in Bath
  • attend special LINC welcome events
  • explore British culture
  • find out about the Students' Union and get involved.

Our mentors

All our mentors have had mentoring and cultural awareness training. Many have also spent time as international students in another country and understand the issues you might face.

Your mentor won't necessarily be from your academic department - the aim of LINC is to help you settle into UK life.

When will I meet my mentor?

Your mentor will contact you by email before you travel to the UK so that you can ask any questions you have before your arrival.

You'll meet your mentor at the welcome event organised by the International Student Advice Team on Monday 23 September. At this event, you'll have the opportunity to get to know your mentor and other members of the LINC programme.

After the welcome party you'll arrange five meetings with your mentor, including a shopping trip, meeting for a coffee and attending some Student's Union events together.

What commitment does it involve?

It's important that you are committed to taking part in the programme before you register.

When you arrive in the UK, you may find that you're very busy, however we strongly advise you to make every effort to attend the welcome party so that you can meet your mentor and arrange a time to see them again.

Having a mentor can make your first semester smoother and more successful - many people make lifelong friends.
