Profile

Application of Software to Pharmaceutical Industry and Healthcare Professions

My interests in laboratory based science have always been coupled with an interest in computer based technology. The application of this interested has resulted in a range of activities, some of which are concerned with education and training, others are based in research and development. The following are example of past, ongoing and current projects.

PCCAL (Pharmacy Consortium for Computer Aided Learning)

Originally funded by a government initiate (TLTP) to produce educational software for undergraduate pharmacy students in the UK, PCCAL has produced over 50 computer aided learning (CAL) packages. The consortium is now self funding and PCCAL packages are used in over 400 Universities worldwide. http://www.coacs.com/PCCAL

Sunlight and Skin Cancer

This is a project funded by the Research Division of the Department of Health with the objective of reducing the incidence of sunlight induced skin cancer. The outcome has been the production of a web based educational CAL package that is used in secondary schools in the UK. In addition to providing information to pupils, it also uses a novel strategy to collection information about the knowledge, behaviour and attitudes of the pupils with the objective of improving the educational material and also improving other strategies for reducing the incidence of sunlight induced skin cancer. http://www.coacs.com/sunlight/

Pharmobility

This is a project funded jointly by the EU Directorate of Education and Culture and FIPSE in the USA. It is one of a number of projects intended to icrease trans-atlantic mobility of students. The “Pharmobility” project is in part concerned with facilitating the movement of pharmacy students. A second, integral, objective has been to produce a CAL package designed to improved pharmacy students understanding of their profession in other countries. http://www.pharmobility.org

Capex

Capex is one of several projects undertaken in collaboration with Capsugel, a division of Pfizer. Capex specifically is a computer based expert system designed to assist pharmaceutical scientists develop formulation to be included in hard gelatine capsules. It is used widely throughout the pharmaceutical industry.
