Biography
Alistair obtained his bachelors degree in physics with first class honours at the University of Southampton in 2004. Upon completion of his undergraduate studies Alistair remained at the University of Southampton to study for his Ph.D at the Optoelectronic Research Centre (ORC) under the supervision of Prof. Robert Eason and Dr Sakellaris Mailis. During his time at the ORC he studied the influence of ultra-violet laser light on single crystal lithium niobate, looking at a range of effects including optically induced refractive index change due to the thermal diffusion of lithium ions, the photo-induced hydrophilic conversion of the crystal surface and the effect of ultra-violet light on the ferroelectric polarity of the crystal both directly and during a post-exposure electric field poling step.
He completed his Ph.D in May 2008 and joined the Centre for Photonics and Photonic Materials at the University of Bath in July 2008 where he is currently involved in a project to assess the role that photonic crystal fibres can play in the spectroscopy of cancers for monitoring and detection. His research interests include lithium niobate and the influence of UV light, non-linear optics and photonic crystal fibres.
