Bath academic invited to UNESCO conference in Beijing

Dr Yukteshwar Kumar was invited as one of the chief speakers at an
international conference titled ‘Chinese History of Science and Its Interaction with other
Civilisations’ in Beijing, China in mid-November 2010. The conference was organised by the United
Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and Chinese Association for
Science & Technology.
The conference primarily focused on the history of interaction between Chinese science and technology, with Islamic, Western, Indian and other East Asian sciences in particular. It also covered historical and contemporary exchanges between Chinese science and other civilisations against the backdrop of their remarkably different cultural, political, and historical experiences.
At the conference, Dr Kumar talked about civilisation dialogue between China and India,
particularly in the field of Science & Technology.
The conference was also attended by Professor Christopher Cullen, the Director of the Needham
Institute, Cambridge, Professor George Saliba from Columbia University, Professor Liu Dun of the
Institute for the History of Natural Science, Beijing and several others.
