Researchers host International SERCIA Conference on Cinema and the Crossing of FrontiersWendy Everett, Dr Nina Parish and Dr Peter Wagstaff from the Department’s Norms, Identities & Representations research cluster were pleased to host the 16th International SERCIA Conference on Cinema and the Crossing of Frontiers at the University of Bath from 8-10 September 2011.

SERCIA is the Société d'Etudes et de Recherches sur le Cinéma Anglophone. It is an international organisation established in France in 1993 to promote the study and teaching of English-speaking cinema.

From the first, Cinema was motivated by a sense of adventure, a desire to create and explore new territories and technologies in its quest for modernity. Cinema has continued, ever since, to question, provoke, and shock; to push back existing limits and to cross perceived frontiers, reflecting the priorities of the Cluster.

The Bath conference sought to celebrate and embrace the adventurous spirit of the medium, and encourage creative and innovative contributions that made the most of the freedom to explore this theme.

Over 80 delegates from the UK, France, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Turkey, Brazil and the United States attended the event. Many gave papers in panels ranging from Crossing the US/Mexico Border to Reinventing the Horror Genre, and from Political Frontiers and the Blacklist to Cinema and Globalisation.

The Mayor of the City of Bath kindly invited all the participants to a civic reception at the Guildhall on 8 September and staff were delighted to welcome Ken Loach, who gave a fascinating plenary on the Friday evening.

The conference organisers plan to produce an edited volume containing contributions from this event.
