An ethical bag company created by two University of Bath students has agreed terms with shop retailer John Lewis to distribute its products.

ElephantBranded , a supplier of ethical bags and related products was created by student entrepreneurs James Boon and Tim Mendelssohn.

James, 23, a current architecture student and Tim, who graduated this year in international management and modern languages, have seen their company grow since it was founded by James in April.

Now in his second year of study, James, who was named one of Google’s ‘Zeitgeist Young Minds’, set up ElephantBranded after working and travelling in Africa and Asia, where he was shocked by the lack of basic school equipment.

ElephantBranded sells ethically made, recycled bags and related products. For each product it sells, it donates a school bag and kit to a child in Africa or Asia. The social responsibility enterprise pays fair, competitive wages to the people who make its bags out of locally sourced, recycled materials. It also gives people the opportunity to learn valuable skills that give them a sustainable, effective way to get out of poverty.
