Is the Euro crisis increasing opposition to the EU?

Wed Nov 14 13:56:00 GMT 2012

Dr Nick Startin, who joined POLIS as a lecturer in French and European Studies last month, took part in a debate at the University of Surrey on the 8th of November entitled ‘Is the Euro crisis increasing opposition to the EU?’

In what turned out to be a lively discussion in front of over 50 students, academics and members of the public, Nick proposed the motion and Dr Simon Usherwood of the University of Surrey opposed. The debate was chaired by the Head of Politics at Surrey, Dr Roberta Guerrina.

In order to justify his argument Nick drew on a range of public opinion and party based evidence as well as looking at the role of pressure groups and the media. Last year Nick, whose main research strand centres on the impact of Euroscepticism on nation states co-founded with Simon Usherwood the Collaborative Research Network (CRN) on Euroscepticism, sponsored by the University Association of Contemporary European Studies (UACES) - a network which has over 100 members from 15 different countries.

Following last year’s launch of the network, which has included two successful annual workshops and panels at various international conferences, Nick in conjunction with Dr Simon Usherwood (as well as Dr Simona Guerra of Leicester University), successfully bid as co-editors to win the Journal of Common Market Studies (JCMS) Special Issue Open Competition for 2013. The edition entitled ‘Confronting Euroscepticism’ will be published in January 2013.
