Dr Aggestam to speak on the eve of the EU receiving Nobel Peace Prize

6 December 2012

Dr Lisbeth Aggestam, an expert on EU foreign policy in the Department of Politics, Languages & International Studies, will be speaking in Oslo on the eve of the Nobel Peace Prize being officially awarded to the European Union.

Dr Aggestam has been invited to give a talk on ‘Europe as a Power for Peace’ at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) on Friday 7 December. She will also be interviewed on Norwegian  Television TV2, and will be interviewed in the national Norwegian newspaper, Dagsavisen.

Awarding the European Union the Nobel Peace Prize has turned out to be a contested decision both internationally and domestically in Norway. In her talk, Dr Aggestam will argue that the highly contested response to the award is due to conflicting understandings of what peace more precisely means. The paradox for the European Union is that the Nobel Peace Prize ironically exposes how disputed the central myth of Europe as a power for peace has become.
