Department celebrates languages with University Skills event

Fri Feb 07 10:37:00 GMT 2014

On the 31 January 2014 we held a languages event for local sixth form students who received training on university skills and had the chance to practice them in the afternoon in their chosen target language.

The event was organized by Dr Irene Macías (Department of Politics, Languages & International Studies) and Isabella Stefanutti (Foreign Languages Centre), and was funded by a Teaching Development Fund grant from the Learning & Teaching Enhancement Office.

Sixth form students and teachers attended a lecture in the morning facilitated by Educational Consultant Dr Margarida Dolan. They learned about independent study, motivation, presentation skills and learning in a multi-cultural context. Afterwards students had a campus tour facilitated by Student Ambassadors in the target languages of the day (French, German and Spanish). This was followed by afternoon sessions in which they worked in groups on different topics that then they had to present in the foreign language. The afternoon sessions were facilitated by language staff (Emilie Poletto, Astrid Forsyth and José Carlos Cirera).

The event was a great success. Students and teachers commented on the usefulness of the day and how enthused they felt to do languages.

"It was really good and great to meet new people and experience a new place."

"It was challenging but I have learned a lot and now I have a better understanding of what languages at university entails."
