Felix Slade (The Brakenhale School), Richard Roberts (GE Capital), and Emily Pitt (Deloitte) shared their experiences with students.

Over 160 pupils and teachers from schools across the South of England and Wales visited the University to take part in the Spotlight on Languages event earlier this month.

Students aged 16-17 took part in interactive workshops, which ranged from Beginners Arabic and Italian, to Spanish culture and political discussions on the future of the EU.

Along with a general talk about the breadth of language programmes offered by the University of Bath, attendees took part in a campus tour led by current languages students, which gave them an insight into University life.

The event concluded with an inspiring talk from one of the University’s careers advisers and three of Bath’s language graduates who have used their skills successfully during their career. Emily Pitt (Deloitte), Richard Roberts (GE Capital), and Felix Slade (The Brakenhale School) spoke about their beneficial experiences during their year abroad at University and encouraged students to use languages to explore the world and expand their career horizons.

The event received enthusiastic feedback from the pupils and teachers. Bettina D’Cruz, Head of German at Bradfield College in Berkshire commented: "Many thanks for this excellent day, our pupils really enjoyed it. One of them told me it was 'exactly what he needed' to help him decide what he wants to do after his IB."

The University hopes to run another Spotlight on Languages event in 2015; for details please contact Stephanie Gan via email: s.a.gan@bath.ac.uk
