Professor Bill Durodie (Head of the Department of Politics, Languages & International Studies) has been speaking about the challenges to nation states and sovereignty posed by new security threats at the 12th Forte de Copacabana Conference held in Rio de Janeiro this week.

The conference, organised by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the Brazilian Centre for International Relations and the European Union, is the largest event of its kind in Latin America.

Professor Durodie spoke of the need to uphold the UN Charter's principle of sovereign equality and to re-engage the public in the democratic process in order to establish authority.
