The Department of Politics, Languages and International Studies within the University of Bath is one of a few HE institutions to enter into a partnership with the Chartered Institute of Linguists.

The Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) is the UK-based professional body that accredits professional linguists. Its aim is to promote the value of learning languages and respect for the diversity of languages and cultures.

In 2016, CIOL launched the Higher Education Language Partner programme, gathering 12 universities with excellent Language departments and wide range of language-related courses.

Dr. Irene Macías SFHEA MCIL, Director of Studies for International Management and Modern Languages, commented on what this new partnership means: "Our languages students can become Student Affiliate members of the institution free of charge. Other benefits include careers support and guidance as well as improving the quality and maintaining the standards of our languages programmes."

CIOL currently has over 7,000 active members, all qualified and experienced language professionals such as interpreters, foreign languages teachers and government officials. Having access to such a diverse professional network is therefore very valuable to our languages students and graduates pursuing their careers in languages sector.

Dr Macías also recognised the prestige which comes with such partnership: "This is a badge of distinction for the Department of Politics Languages and International Studies and we look forward to working with CIOL."
