Profile
Professor Adrian Hyde-Price joined the Department in April 2007 as Professor of International Politics. He has a First Class Honours Degree in Politics from the University College of Wales of Aberystwyth and a Doctorate from the University of Kent at Canterbury. He subsequently undertook post-doctoral research in the German Democratic Republic under the auspices of the British Council before being appointed to his first lecturing post at the University of Manchester. He subsequently worked at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) in London as a Research Fellow on the International Security Programme. During this time he worked on the end of the Cold War and gave evidence to the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee on post-cold war Eastern Europe.
Professor Hyde-Price subsequently lectured at the Universities of Southampton and Birmingham, before being appointed to the Chair of Politics and International Relations at the University of Leicester. He has received research grants from the ESRC, the Nuffield Foundation, the British Academy and NATO. Most recently, he has been part of an international research consortium, funded by the EU Framework 7 Programme, working on a project entitled ‘Building a Just and Durable Peace by Piece’. This research project focused on the European Union’s approach to crisis management and peace-building in the Middle East and the Western Balkans.

Research Interests
His research over the last two decades has explored the changing nature of power and the constitution of international order in Europe. His primary interest has been in analysing the transformation of European international society following the demise of Cold War bipolarity, focusing above all on the implications for state strategies, institutional architecture and foreign policy behaviour.
Professor Hyde-Price’s recent research has primarily been in the field of European politics and International order, and has focused on:
- the transformation of Europe’s security order
- the European Union as an international actor
- NATO and transatlantic relations
- strategic culture and the use of force
- European security and the Middle East
- Conflict resolution, humanitarian military intervention and peace support operations
- the ethical dimensions of statecraft and foreign policy.
