Dr Barrinha joined the department in September 2017, having previously worked at the University of Coimbra and Canterbury Christ Church University.

His main research interests are within the fields of Critical Security Studies, European security, Turkish Foreign Policy and International Relations Theory.

He is currently working on the role of new technologies in the constitution of security policies (mostly) in Europe, with a special focus on cybersecurity.

Dr Barrinha co-convenes the British International Studies Association European Security Working Group with Dr Helena Farrand Carrapico (Aston University) and Dr Adrian Treacher (University of Sussex). He is also one of the coordinators of the UACES CRN INTERSECT: Technology-Security-Society interplays in Europe and a Researcher at the Centre for Social Studies, University of Coimbra.
