Jolyon Howorth joined the Department in 1985 as Professor of French Civilisation. He was Head of Department from 1985 to 1990. In 1991, he was appointed, by the European Commission, to a Jean Monnet Chair in European Politics, which was made ad personam in 2004 when he formally retired from the Chair of French Civilisation. In 2010, he became Professor Emeritus of European Studies. Professor Howorth launched both the International Management and Modern Languages degree (in 1988) and the Euromasters degree (in 1995).

Since 2002, he has been Visiting Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at Yale University.

He is a Senior Research Associate at the Institut Français des Relations Internationales (IFRI, Paris), a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts (UK), Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques (France), and Member of the Advisory Boards of the European Institute for Public Administration (Netherlands), the Institut de Recherche Stratégique de l'Ecole Militaire (Paris) and the Centre for the Study of Security and Diplomacy (UK).

Research interests

  • The development of European strategic thinking in European Security and Defence Policy
  • The analysis of the decision-making procedures in European Foreign and Security Policy
  • Relations between European Security and Defence Policy, the US and NATO
  • The empirical record of the EU’s reactions to the Arab spring


Since his retirement from the Department, Professor Howorth has not conducted any formal teaching at the University of Bath. He lectures once or twice a year to the Euromasters cohort.
