Dr Leslie Wehner Venegas

A senior lecturer in foreign policy analysis with a particular focus on Latin America and regional powers (BRICS states).

Profile

Dr Wehner Venegas joined the Department in January 2015 as Senior Lecturer in Foreign Policy Analysis. Previously he was a Senior Research Fellow at GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies, Hamburg, where he holds an associate fellow status.

He lectured foreign policy analysis, international political economy, comparative regionalism and international politics of Latin America in different German Universities, such as the University of Kiel, Leuphana University Lüneburg and the University of Hamburg.

He did his first degrees at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and his postgraduate work at the University of Essex and Lund University. He received his PhD in Political Science from the University of Hamburg.

His specific areas of interest include role theory in foreign policy analysis and international political economy, emerging and declining powers, foreign policies and foreign economic policies of Latin American states, and the institutional overlapping of regional groups in Latin America.

He is currently a member of the editorial board of the journal of Latin American Politics (JPLS) and of foreign policy analysis.

He has authored a book, Explaining Failed Free Trade Agreement Negotiations: Cases from Latin America, and his most recent articles have been published in Foreign Policy Analysis, International Studies Review, and International Politics and bulletin of Latin American research.
