Mr Thomas Sheppard Chair of Council
The Chair is responsible for leadership of the Council as the governing body of the institution and ultimately to its stakeholders for its effectiveness.
With more than 40 years' experience as a lawyer, Thomas Sheppard held a number of senior positions within leading commercial law firm, Thrings. For a decade, Thomas was Managing Partner, overseeing a significant period of growth for the firm.
Thomas has spent much of his professional life advising and working for clients but, unusually, he has also had many years' experience leading and managing the business of law firms.
Over and above his legal positions, Thomas has held a number of roles within the business world as well as with charities and not-for-profit organisations.
2003–2013 Managing Partner Thrings LLP (top 100 UK law firm) with executive leadership of business to include line management of HR function; oversight of all professional appointments, remuneration, reward and benefit strategy for all staff and partners; reporting to Audit Committee and Partnership.
2013-2018 Lead officer of specialist business (hived out of Thrings LLP) with c70 staff; responsible for all appointments and the remuneration strategy with professional support; reporting to Remuneration Committee and Board.
1980 – 1995 Partner lead at Thring Townsend, for legal delivery teams over period, with responsibility for fee earner reward and review; from 1995-1997 the Managing Partner with overall responsibility for recommending pay strategy for all staff and partner reward; reporting to Partnership.
Not for profit roles:
Chair of trustees for charities which have a senior executive team and meaningful numbers of employees; responsibility for oversight of the remuneration both on recruitment and review reporting to Board of Trustees. (Hospice: 1996-2000; Health research charity: 2004-2015 and Museums and campaigning charity: 2014–current).
Thomas lives in Bath, is married with two adult sons and spends any spare time pursuing his love of cooking, cycling and Bath Rugby.
