Clinical Psychology
Our Clinical Psychology research group investigates psychological processes (cognitive, emotional, behavioural and physiological) which link to psychological problems. This in turn informs the prevention, identification and treatment of such problems in mental and physical health settings as well as the general population.
The team takes an applied science approach to the understanding and treatment of a range of problems across the lifespan. We have strong links with clinicians and researchers regionally, nationally and internationally.
Research focus
Research activity covers most of clinical psychology and psychopathology with particular strengths in:
- Clinical Health Psychology
- Common mental health problems (anxiety and depression)
- Medically Unexplained Symptoms (Chronic Fatigue, Pain)
- Autistic Spectrum Disorders
- Psychosis
- Bipolar Disorder
- Long Term Physical Conditions (Respiratory Disease, Multiple Sclerosis)
The team have been particularly innovative in developing understanding and application of a range of problem specific and trans-diagnostic processes and their integration.
The unifying themes which guide our group include:
- Trans-diagnostic processes and strategies in treatment (for example)
- Safety seeking behaviour
- Emotional and other types of suppression
- Intolerance of uncertainty and threat related reactions
- Investigation of maintaining factors and treatments Integration of trans-diagnostic and specific approaches
- Stigma and self perception in mental health problems
- Prevention, Early Detection and Early intervention of psychological problems
- Clinical Health Psychology including interventions and behavioural change and Health decision making.
- Developmental factors and trans-generational issues in mental health problems
- Innovative approaches to the understanding of emotional regulation, such as Mindfulness, mental defeat, cognitive flexibility.
