Exploring the impact of pornography on young people: A research study

Mon May 08 12:20:00 BST 2017

What does the research study involve?

Our study is looking at the impact of pornography on young people (aged 16-21). You will be asked to complete a series of online questionnaires, which will ask for some information about you and your background (but it will not be possible to identify who you are), your use of pornography (if you have looked at it before), your opinions, and your behaviour.

How long will it take?

The study will take between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on the answers you give.

When and where will the research take place?

  • This research will take place from 5th-25th May.
  • All participation is online.

Who can take part?

Participants must be:

  • Aged 16-21
  • Living in the UK on a permanent basis
  • A fluent English speaker
  • Not involved in an on-going court case regarding sexual behaviour

We would like to hear from people who haven’t looked at pornography as well as those who have.

Will my taking part in this study be kept confidential?

All information and data provided will remain strictly confidential and all reports will be anonymised. All research data will be collected anonymously - not even the researchers will know which answers you give.  This research has been approved by the Department of Psychology Ethics Committee (Ref. 16-224)

Why should you take part?

  • You will help to contribute towards important research to help professionals learn about the effects of online pornography on young people.  This will help them think about how to reduce any negative effects that pornography might have, to protect the well being of young people.
  • A full list of support services is provided at the end of this study, in case you feel in any way distressed during participation or have further queries and wish to seek support.
  • We regret that we are unable to offer payment for participation, but are very grateful for your time.
