Profile

Dr Karen Rodham joined the University in 2002. She is a Chartered Health Psychologist and she combines her academic role at the University of Bath with a practice role (every Monday) at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases (also in Bath).

Karen’s research is driven both by her curiosity about how people cope when they are facing difficult situations as well as her desire to ensure that her research has impact, not just for theoretical development, but also for practice. She takes a phenomenological perspective and the questions she is interested in answering are those that require understanding the lived experience of the people she studies.

Outside academia, Karen spends as much time as she can in the hills. She is a qualified Mountain Leader (summer) and often takes young people on adventures to learn about map reading, camping and clambering about in all weathers.

Research interests

Dr Rodham has expertise in conducting qualitative research focusing upon how people cope with difficult health-related situations with particular interest in the following:

  • self-harming behaviour
  • coping strategies employed by people who have chronic health problems
  • how the Internet is used by different groups as a means of coping with their problems
  • how healthcare professionals cope with their job stress
