What is Impact?

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research Professor Jane Millar, Dr James Bilzon and Dr Chris Brace discuss the importance of impact to the University and their research, at the start of the project in 2009.

What is the Knowledge Transfer Account (KTA)?

Jon Hunt and Denise Cooke discuss the KTA initiative at the start of the project in 2009.

Ashwoods Hybrid Motor System

KTA Partnership Development Award
Dr Chris Brace, Dr Sam Akehurst and Prof Andrew Plummer

Dr Chris Brace and his team have been working with Ashwoods Automotive Ltd. to develop a new generation of hybrid systems for diesel vans. The project will help produce a product for the mass market that will significantly reduce carbon emissions from the motor industry.

Channelling Research Through CPD

KTA Partnership Development Award
Prof Gary Hawley and Dr Alex Copping

Professor Gary Hawley and Dr Alex Copping in the Dept of Mechanical Engineering have developed distance learning CPD courses addressing key aspects of energy efficiency and sustainability.

Cost Reduction and Product Innovation with Stock Redler

KTA Partnership Development Award
Prof Glen Mullineux and Dr Andrew Hillis

Professor Glen Mullineux and Dr Andrew Hillis have been working with Schenck Processes UK to improve the machine design of bulk handling machines. The impact could be significant cost reduction, greater efficiencies, flexibility and capability building within the company leading to improved profitability and market position both locally and globally.

Imaging Technology Transfer - Helping to Diagnose Dementia

KTA Knowledge Transfer Fellowship Award
Prof Cathryn Mitchell, Dept of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, and Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Trust.

Dr Nathan Smith worked with physicists from Nuclear Medicine departments in Bristol and Bath to improve the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.

Improving the Accuracy of GPS

KTA Proof of Concept Award
Prof Cathryn Mitchell and Dr Julian Rose, Dept of Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Dr Julian Rose talks about his research into how space weather affects the accuracy of satellite navigation systems such as GPS.

Low Carbon Renewable Building Materials

KT Fellowship
Prof Pete Walker, Dept of Architecture and Civil Engineering, and BRE Wales & South West

BRE works with Pete Walker to promote low impact building materials to the construction industry.

Mobile Science Education Adoption through Knowledge Transfer

KTA Proof of Concept Award
Prof Danaë Stanton-Fraser, CREATE Laboratory, Department of Psychology, and Sciencescope Ltd.

Danӓe Stanton-Fraser shows how mobile science technology can improve science learning.

Novel Responsive Antimicrobial Dressing

KTA Proof of Concept Award
Dr Toby Jenkins, Department of Chemistry, and the South West UK Children's Burn Centre, North Bristol NHS Trust

Dr Toby Jenkins of the Chemistry Department, University of Bath and Dr Amber Young of Frenchay Hospital, Bristol, have been collaborating on a new burns dressing project. Their burns dressing will detect bacterial toxins in a wound, alerting clinicians to infection. This will improve the treatment of burns, especially in paediatric burns cases.

Piezoelectric Aero Engine Control Systems (PACS)

KTA Partnership Development Award
Prof Andrew Plummer, Centre for Power Transmission and Motion Control (PTMC), Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Aero Engine Controls (AEC)

Andrew Plummer’s group in Mechanical Engineering have developed some piezoelectric valves that could radically improve aero engine fuel control, helping to reduce harmful emissions from flying.

Processing Unstructured Data in Naval Engineering Records

KTA Partnership Development Award
Prof Chris McMahon and Prof Steve Culley, Innovative design and Manufacturing Research Centre (IdMRC), Dept of Mechanical Engineering, and Babcock International Group Plc.

Babcock International benefit from Chris McMahon's research in faceted classification.

Project Edison SmartDC

Prof Raj Aggarwal and Dr Mike Redfern

The University of Bath's library hosts Britain's first local DC Network. This KTA project has resulted in huge energy savings, and is challenging the way energy companies think about supplying power to our homes and businesses.

Sustainable Water Treatment and Algae Production

KTA Partnership Development Award
Prof Rod Scott, Dr Tom Arnot and Prof Matt Davidson, Dept of Biology & Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Chemistry, and Aragreen (UK) Ltd.

Rod Scott, Tom Arnot and Matt Davidson from the Faculty of Science have been collaborating with Aragreen (UK) Ltd. to develop a sustainable algae-based wastewater treatment system.

Turbo Centre

KTA Partnership Development Award
Dr Chris Brace and Dr Sam Akehurst

Dr Chris Brace and the Department of Mechanical Engineering are collaborating with Ford Motor Company, Jaguar LandRover and Cummins Turbo Technologies to improve how turbocharged engine systems are designed and engineered. This will have an impact on reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from engines in future.
