Outcome of the EPSRC Delivery Funding call 2011
In October 2011 a call was announced to commit the limited funds available from the EPSRC, known as the EPSRC Delivery Fund (EDF). The closing date for the open call was 31st October 2011 and we received 47 high quality proposals.
The decisions on the successful and unsuccessful EDF proposals were difficult with so many good projects to choose from. The panel, comprising the four Associate Deans for Research, Professor Julian Chaudhuri, Professor Matt Davidson, Professor Russ Vince and Dr Danaë Stanton-Fraser; Professor Chris Eccleston (Health), Dr Rob Head, Dr Jon Hunt and Dave Biddle (RDSO); and Sian Doherty (Faculty of Engineering and Design), reviewed each proposal and gave a rating of Yes, Maybe and No. The ‘Yes’ proposals were reviewed further to decide which ones to fund, including an attempt to fund a balanced portfolio of projects across the University of Bath.
- Activities that primarily fall into EPSRC’s remit;
- How the funds can be maximised and used as an investment or leverage to generate further research income;
- The development of new industrial collaborators;
- Matched funding from external partners;
- Activities that will demonstrate high impact.
The bids that addressed the above were then balanced to fit three headings, each of which came with a dedicated budget line from the EPSRC, as follows:
- Delivering Impact: Sponsoring Pathways to Impact
- Developing Leaders: Widening the pool of research experience
- Shaping capability: Bridging the gaps
The final list of funded open call projects are below:
- Skywell: Jonathan Dawes, Frank Marken, Michael Patterson, Laura Torrente, and Elisabeth Ullmann
- The Future Water Laboratory: Svenja Tams
- Workshop - CDT Innovation Catalyst Programme : Jeannette Mueller
- Development of prototype bacteria detecting wound dressing: Toby Jenkins

- Managing demand for sustainability in suppliers: Setting priorities and assessing: Stefan Hoejmose & Johanne Grosvold
- Remote mobile technology and the ecological assessment of ageing related interference: Ed Keogh
Proposals that were unsuccessful are being reviewed further to seek other funding opportunities, including four or five proposals that can leverage funding from businesses. All applicants have been offered the chance to attend one of our Application Surgeries, the next one being 1st December 2011 – please contact Sylvia Wardle to book a place.
