EPSRC 'Bridging the Gaps' between Mathematics, ICT and Engineering

Newsletter, April 2008
Newsletter, December 2008

Creativity in System Design: The Bath Interactive Ideas Factory has been funded by the EPSRC "Bridging the Gaps between the Mathematical Sciences, ICT and Engineering" initiative. It provides a meeting ground for researchers from the University of Bath, the core disciplines being Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematical Sciences. Initial activities concentrated on the Departments of Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering.

Activities now include 300 researchers and academics from 17 departments across the University and from external services.

Benefits for academics:

  1. Themed workshops to describe research capability, identify research problems and groups working on them.
  2. Take part in theme-focussed sandpit events and benefit from seed-funding to develop research ideas.
  3. Look at your research from a different angle. The input from a colleague offers a chance to trigger new ideas.
  4. Meet potential partners at networking events as well as a virtual collaboration environment listing expertise profiles.
  5. Partnering Awards to foster engagement and the formation of groups under one research theme
  6. Apply for teaching buy-out to work with a partner on a joint idea or research problem.
  7. Pair up with a colleague from the opposite discipline and attend a conference together.
  8. Work and recruit one of two PhD students, funded by the University of Bath, for the whole three years it takes to finish their degrees. They must be jointly supervised by yourself and a colleague from the opposite discipline.
  9. Flexible Awards: Scope out your interdisciplinary ideas with a partner from an Engineering discipline, Computer Science or Mathematical Sciences.

Bridging the Gaps aims to establish an environment that nurtures communication and joint research work in interdisciplinary teams. A series of networking events and themed workshops helps to facilitate communication.
