Addressing child poverty across the globe
We were delighted to be awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize for our influential research into child poverty and support for vulnerable people.
The award is the country’s most prestigious national recognition for a UK academic or vocational institution and reflects the impact our research has had on the wellbeing of families in the UK and many other countries.
Our research in this field uniquely links social policy and international development studies, meaning researchers work in both rich and poor countries.
Our Department of Social and Policy Sciences’ research has been widely recognised as exceptional and distinctive in the UK and globally by policy makers and charities. They consistently provide sound evidence and analysis for policy makers across the political spectrum and play a key role in informing wider policy debates.
The research has included: path-breaking studies of poverty and social exclusion in Europe; lone mothers and employment; child poverty from the children’s own perspective; and wellbeing in developing countries.
The impact of this research includes:
- informing UK legislation on tackling child poverty
- the design of the tax credits system
- advising the Welsh government on policies promoting child welfare
- stimulating innovations in micro-finance
- helping to develop strategies for tackling extreme poverty in Bangladesh.
