BBSRC Visit University of Bath

Professor Melanie Welham, BBSRC Executive Director of Science and Visiting Professor, has visited the University with colleagues as part of an Outreach Programme from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).

Research and Innovation Services arranged and supported the event, with the party also consisting of Dr Jef Grainger, BBSRC Head of Sector for Bioscience for Health; Dr Charly Cureton, BBSRC Strategy and Policy Manager for Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy; and Catherine Bond, BBSRC Assistant Peer Review Officer.

Following arrival and refreshments, Professor Rod Scott, Head of Biology and Biochemistry, provided an introduction, during which the BBSRC addressed their remit, strategic priorities and funding opportunities. A question and answer session followed.

Later, the afternoon consisted of a Roundtable with Professor Welham and senior researchers, followed by meetings with Heads of Departments, whilst giving an opportunity for the remainder of the party to talk on BBSRC grant writing and peer review. There were further questions and answers before individual appointments for academics with the BBSRC representatives.

The evening was followed by a Science Café, focused on investing in research: where does the money come from, go to and how? The discussion helped to answer these questions by considering the landscape and processes that support the funding of research in the UK.

Professor Melanie Welham says: “BBSRC invests in a wide spectrum of bioscience research spanning investigator-inspired curiosity-led research through to research motivated by solving grand challenges and specific problems. As part of a programme of outreach visits it is a pleasure to visit Bath and engage in discussions with colleagues around future opportunities for the University in the broader Life sciences".

Dr Jon Hunt, Director Research and Innovation Services, says: “I invited Melanie and her team to the University of Bath as there are many ideas being developed, which will hopefully benefit from the direct feedback from BBSRC”.
