Professional Development Courses for Externals

Last month saw the final session of a five-day professional development course for patent examiners created and delivered by academics in the Department of Biology and Biochemistry, with support from the CPD team in Research and Innovation Services.

Professor Rod Scott, Head of Biology & Biochemistry, says: “This course is a wonderful example of how academia can have impact in the real world, where needs constantly change and professional development is a necessity.”

The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) in Newport has seen a significant increase in the number of patent applications relating to biotechnology and approached the University regarding a possible training course in specific subject areas.

The academic team, including Dr Stefan Bagby, Dr Momna Hejmadi, Dr Alex Jeffries and Dr Paul Whitley, worked with senior managers at the IPO to develop an intensive programme made up of a stimulating mix of lecture and laboratory-based activities, together with a bespoke area on the virtual learning environment. The course involved three days on campus, which incorporated visits to the University’s Microscopy & Analysis Suite, and Chemical Characterisation & Analysis Facility, followed by two days at the IPO’s premises in Newport.

Lead academic, Dr Stefan Bagby, commented that: “It was stimulating to interact with a cohort with a perspective different from that of our undergraduates.”

One delegate fed back that, “This course has provided me with an opportunity to gain awareness of a vast area of bioscience that, at this stage of my career, I would otherwise be unlikely to get an opportunity to explore and learn about.”

Dr Denise Cooke, Head of CPD, highlighted that: “Links developed with external organisations through this kind of bespoke course development can lead to a variety of other joint projects which can bring mutual benefits.”

The CPD team supports University of Bath academics who are interested in developing and delivering courses aimed at external audiences in the public and private sectors.
