TSB Award Fianium KTP ‘Outstanding’

The Technology Strategy Board (TSB) has awarded the University of Bath’s Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Fianium Ltd as ‘Outstanding’ by the KTP Grading Panel for its achievement in meeting KTP’s Objectives.

Professor Jonathan Knight, Department of Physics, was awarded the KTP in 2011 with Fianium, a fibre laser company focused on the manufacture and development of ultrafast, high power laser systems. Typical applications of the lasers include scientific research, medical imaging and ultrafast material processing.

Professor Knight, with Dr William Wadsworth and KTP Associate Dr Jim Stone (also from the Department of Physics) has worked with Fianium, to research, develop and exploit new laser pumped light sources based on combining fibre lasers with the Photonic Crystal Fibres developed at the University.

Professor Knight says: “This grading recognises the value generated through our relationship with Fianium. This KTP will have lasting benefits to both the academic and the industrial partners.”

Director of Business Development at Fianium, John Clowes, commented: “The KTP grading is another excellent example of our continued successful working relationship with Professor Knight’s team at the University of Bath. It is also another demonstration of how the TSB are helping UK SME’s to work with the very best research groups to develop and commercialise world-leading technology”.

This award comes only months after the TSB also graded the University of Bath KTP with Biocatalysts Ltd as ‘Outstanding’, reinforcing the University’s reputation of KTP excellence.

Clive Bailey, Business Development Manager in RDSO, says: “It is extremely rare for the TSB to award a Grade A of ‘Outstanding’ to any KTP in the UK. This is the second such award to the University this year alone and demonstrates why the University attracts so many enquiries from industry and organisations looking to tap into the skills and expertise of our academic community”.
