New Exchange Fund to deepen links with Brazil

The São Paulo Research Foundation, Brazil (FAPESP) and the University of Bath have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the exchange of researchers between the State of São Paulo and the University.

Each will be investing in a joint fund to allow calls for proposals from researchers affiliated with the University of Bath and Higher Education and Research Institutions in the State of São Paulo, who are also Principal or Co-Investigators of ongoing FAPESP research.

This exchange fund comes only months after the University established a new research-led partnership with Universidade de São Paulo (USP), Latin America’s leading University.

It is one of a number of new funding schemes which will both provide practical support to academics wishing to collaborate with international partners and help to attract talented researchers to come to Bath.

Professor Colin Grant, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Internationalisation), who is leading the University’s effort to build its international profile, says: “The exchange funds will not only broaden the University of Bath’s existing links with Brazil but have the potential for further collaborative activity in the future. This is an exciting time for academic researchers.”

The awards are expected to enhance or explore new research opportunities for Bath researchers, for an exchange with colleagues in São Paulo currently working on a FAPESP-funded proposal.

Dr Gareth Buchanan, Research Development Manager in RDSO, says: “The exchange funds will prove real benefit to academic researchers university-wide, who will have travel, health insurance and living allowances provided to support their exchange with São Paulo affiliated researchers”.

Applications will first be assessed through an internal panel comprising Professor Jane Millar (PVC Research) and the Associate Deans for Research, before being subsequently reviewed by FAPESP.

Researchers wishing to submit a proposal are advised to note the eligibility requirements.
