The Self Access Language Centre

MISSION STATEMENT

The objectives of the SALC are to:

• Provide a supportive environment for autonomous language learning.

• Make available an easily accessible and large variety of learning materials, media and activities.

• Provide orientation and advice on what is available, where to find it, and how it can be used.

• Help learners develop the ability to control their own learning.

• Raise awareness of the possibilities for language learning both inside and beyond the SALC.

• Help to identify specific needs, set goals, choose appropriate learning materials or strategies, and evaluate progress.

• Incorporate self-directed learning into Language Centre courses and advise colleagues on how to support the development of learner autonomy in our students.

• Continually evaluate and develop the service provided.

• Conduct investigative and evaluative research into self-directed learning and learner autonomy to ensure a dynamic and effective provision of learning environment and advice; and to solicit user feedback through a variety of channels.

• Promote the development of learner autonomy to the wider community.
