Sam Cove
BSc (hons) Computer Science - on placement at Microsoft Ltd in the Enterprise Services Department
“Sam’s intelligence, ability and enthusiasm have made him a real asset to the team. With strong core skills, delivering well has been an increasing realisation of what it means to deliver above and beyond expectations – doing the extra things that make the difference between good and great. I have very much appreciated the support Sam has delivered – in a whole host of ways – in the course of the year, and will look forward to tracking his progress as he completes his degree and embarks on his career in earnest.”
Internal Communications Manager, Microsoft
Industrial placements
Consistently ranked amongst top 10 in the UK, our competitive science programmes attract some of the highest-achieving students from diverse backgrounds, having gained top grades in their A levels or equivalent studies.
The Faculty of Science has the UK’s longest established placements programme and strong industrial links in the UK and overseas. All of our science degrees offer students the opportunity to gain up to 12 months professional work experience during their third year and 60% of our students undertake a work placement as part of their degree.
Our graduate employment rates are among the best in the country. We firmly believe this is because we offer high quality professional placement opportunities, embedded in our degree programmes and developed over many years with the support from a broad range of employers. Combining practical work experience with academic study is one of our key differentiators.
We can help your organisation attract some of the best students to work on placements and projects which will support your recruitment and talent development strategies.

Dedicated placement team
We have a dedicated team to help employers and students with the placement process. Our team provides access to students across all science disciplines and will ensure that your vacancy is advertised internally to the appropriate students. They can also offer advice to companies to help you identify and develop suitable placement opportunities.
During the placement period, our teams make regular contact with students and employers to gather feedback, monitor progress and ensure student wellbeing.
Your next steps
Placements typically start in June, July or August and last for 12 months.
Contact us with a job description and an advert that describes your business, area of work and the type of skills you need. We will then:
- Advertise the vacancy to the right students
- Collate and send CVs and covering letters to you or direct students to your online application
- We would prefer that you interview students at your site but if you would like to hold interviews on campus let us know and we can arrange this for you
If you would like to give a presentation on campus and visit students and staff in our departments we can help you organise that.
