Cycle security
Security shackles (D-locks)
Bicycles left unlocked on campus have on occasions been stolen. As a crime reduction measure security shackles (D-locks) are available for hire from the Library Security desk for a returnable deposit of £15. If you lose your key, a replacement is available for £5.
The shackles are:
- Manufactured by a German company called ‘Trelock’
- Awarded BS610 plus the ‘Sold Secure’ Gold rating
- Approved by bicycle insurers
- Recommended for securing bicycles to approved University shelters and racks.
There are a few conditions of hire (available as a
pdf document 
). Students may hire a shackle until the end of the academic year, and
staff
on a longer term basis.
Securing of cycles
There is ample cycle parking available on campus - please see the cycle parking and facilities page for further information, also the cycle parking location map. Please do not secure cycles to railings on the Parade or elsewhere, as this may obstruct people with disabilities.
Cycle Secure scheme
This scheme promotes our shackle hire. It entails Security Officers securing unlocked cycles with a shackle, then attaching an information sheet advising the owner to visit Security for shackle removal. We then encourage the cyclist to hire a shackle for protecting their bicycle.
