Car Share permits

The Car Share permit scheme is designed for members of University-employed staff (and eligible students) who have elected to regularly share their car journey to the University.

One permit may be paid for at the standard rate by a Principal Permit Holder, who will then undertake to collect the shared fee from the others in the group. The permit should be displayed in the vehicle currently being used by the group; only one vehicle per Car Share permit may be parked on campus at any one time.

There will be occasions that group members are unable to car share, meaning that more than one vehicle in the group needs to be parked on campus at the same time. For this purpose a free Occasional User permit will be issued to each driver in the group. This should be validated by purchasing and clearly displaying alongside the Occasional User permit a £1.10 Pay & Display ticket on each day of use.
This should only happen occasionally; car sharing must be the primary method of transport for all members of the group.

The Permits page provides some general information regarding parking permits, as well as prices and details of how to apply for a Car Share permit.

Please check with your car insurer before taking part in this scheme to ensure your policy includes cover for car sharing with colleagues.

Car Share spaces

A number of reserved Car Share spaces have been created in the car parks close to University buildings.
There are six spaces in East Car Park and six in West Car Park, as shown in the photographs below.

East Car Park

West Car Park

Permission to park in the Car Share spaces is granted as an incentive to make positive changes to travelling habits.

These spaces are reserved for Car Share permit holders until 10.30am Monday to Friday, after which they become available for any permit holder.
Drivers parking vehicles here not displaying Car Share permit between 8am and 10.30am Monday to Friday are liable to be issued with a Civil Parking Notice.

Restrictions

Car sharing is defined for the purposes of this policy as:

  1. Two or more members of University-employed staff or eligible students who have elected to regularly share the car journey from their respective homes to the University and;
  2. Two or more standard permit holders who have elected to surrender these permits in exchange for one Car Share permit, thus representing a change in travelling habits.

Car sharing is not defined for the purposes of this policy as:

  1. A member of staff or an eligible student who is giving a lift to a colleague who is not a permit holder/car owner or;
  2. Two or more members of staff or students who live together at the same address and would normally travel to the University in the same car anyway, even if they have a car each.

Whilst the above travel situations are encouraged by the University, neither would represent a reduction in the number of vehicles parked on campus.
In both cases, the cost of the standard permit could still be shared informally between the two individuals.

In the case of the latter an Occasional User permit could be supplied if there is a second vehicle for days when both need to be parked on campus at the same time.
