Professor Guy Standing's new book ' The Precariat: the new dangerous class' is being launched at Topping's bookshop in Bath on Tuesday 10 May at 7.45pm.

In Professor Standing's book, he looks at the growing number of people across the world living and working precariously, usually in a series of short-term jobs and without recourse to social or occupational stability.

This class of people can produce instabilities within society. Increasingly frustrated, they are dangerous because they lack a voice, and are therefore vulnerable to the siren calls of extreme political parties.

This is a topical and radical book, which outlines not only the problem but a potential solution, which would involve more people in civil society and re-engage the precariat.
Guy Standing is Professor of Economic Security at the University of Bath. He was formerly Director of the Socio-Economic Security Programme of the International Labour Organization. He is co-president of the Basic Income Earth Network. His recent books include ' Work after Globalization: Building Occupational Citizenship' (2009) and ' Beyond the New Paternalism: Basic Security as Equality' (2002).
