Dr Dinerstein to present paper at UN Research Institute for Social Development
15 January 2013
Dr Ana C. Dinerstein’s paper ‘The Dark Side of the Social and Solidarity Economy in Latin America’ has been selected to be presented at the International Symposium Potential and Limits of Social and Solidarity Economy that will be hosted by the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) in Geneva.
The UNRISD call for papers, which received 370 submissions, was launched at an event as part of the UN Human Rights Council's 2012 Social Forum in October 2012. According to the UNRISD, while there is a great deal of interest in, and research around, some of the topics highlighted by the UNRISD project, there has so far been very little dialogue at the international level on how Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) can be brought into policy. Its unique role within the UN system positions UNRISD well to bring perspectives from researchers around the world into the international arena.
The UNRISD inquiry has two main objectives:
- to understand the conditions and contexts that enable SSE to expand;
- to assess the implications of such processes and interactions with external actors and institutions for realising the potential of SSE as a distinctive approach to development.
From a policy perspective, the inquiry aims to give more visibility to SSE in UN policy debates and bring to the attention of policy makers key findings and recommendations from researchers around the world on the potential and limits of SSE, its role in addressing contemporary development challenges, and its place in a post-2015 development agenda.
The UNRISD inquiry will be undertaken in close collaboration with a number of other UN organisations.
