Department hosts workshop for social workers and social work students
24 May 2013
On Monday 20th May Mark Baldwin and Marie Porter facilitated a workshop at the University of Bath for social workers, social work students and service users entitled ‘Benefit changes and the attack on the working class poor – what can social workers do?’
The workshop laid out the changes to benefits that have been introduced recently and will continue to be introduced over the coming months, noting that the hardest hit by these benefits will be;
- poor working class families
- disabled and people who are unwell
Women and people from minority ethnic parts of the population will also receive the greatest ‘
impact’ from the changes.
These are precisely the groups that social workers are likely to be working with. The
workshop looked at actions that social workers could take both within their employing agencies but
also as activists, campaigning with colleagues through unions, with service user alliances and in
wider political organisations, such as anti-cuts alliances.
