Dr Louise Brown (Reader of Social Work) met academics, students and social work practitioners from Yonsei University School of Social Welfare during a visit to Seoul at the end of September to strengthen the relationship between their Social Welfare and the Bath Social Work Programme through the development of specific projects.

The week long visit supported by the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences International Development Fund built upon an earlier visit made by Prof Colin Grant and Prof Charlie Lees. During the week Dr Brown gave a research presentation to faculty staff and students, participated in visits to local social work agencies and explored exchange schemes around research and teaching.

Speaking about the visit, Dr Brown said “The visit was a huge success. Yonsei is a prestigious university for us to be working with. Professor Choi, Dean of the School demonstrated his commitment to this collaboration by offering generous scholarships to Bath students wishing to spend time studying at Yonsei. In addition there was time to map out a potential research project with Prof Clif Emery who I hope we can host as a visiting academic at Bath next summer. I look forward to continuing to develop these links over the coming years.”

During the week Dr Brown was also invited to give a presentation on social work education to the Korean Council for Social Work Education at the National Congress Building to an audience of 130 Professors of Social Work, Ministers and Members of Parliament. Despite the daunting audience, Louise was joined by a University of Bath doctoral student Sung-Hee Lee who also gave an excellent presentation, both of which were very well received. She commented “Sung-Hee did an incredible job of representing the University and showing just what high calibre students we have here at Bath”.
