Wed Oct 23 14:03:00 BST 2013

CDAS - Date With Death eventUsing a speed-dating format, the event, which was held at the University of the West of England, aimed to build collaborations and partnerships between universities, industry, the public sector and the voluntary sector.

All four universities within the newly launched GW4 network – Bath, Bristol, Exeter and Cardiff – were represented, as well as local services, companies and health care teams within the South West.

Professor Tony Walter, Director of CDAS, said: “We know that there are academics working in every university looking at issues of mortality, but they don’t necessarily know each other.

“CDAS has a track record through our conferences and seminar programme of bringing together  various elements of this community, but this is the first time we have brought them together specifically to network.”

Every delegate meet at least 12 new contacts on their formal ‘dates’ and feedback was very positive:

“The range of people attending and interests was quite extraordinary and gave me great food for thought.”

“I have met six potential research partners and a possible co-author. Much more importantly I am back in touch with so much that is happening and am having some radical new thoughts as a consequence.”

“Some contacts have already come through with other connections being passed on in the last few days.”

CDAS is committed to making a difference to policy and practice, and in facilitating the event the team have brought together individuals who’s paths would not normally cross.
