The  Centre for Development Studies supported workshop at the National Council for Voluntary Organisations in London on 5 December 2014.

The event was organised as part of an ongoing Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between the University of Bath and Triple Line Consulting, a leading challenge fund manager. It was attended by more than fifty challenge fund specialists representing official donors, NGOs and development consulting firms.

The workshop reviewed detailed case studies of the Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund, the Civil Society Challenge Fund, SHIREE (Bangladesh) and the Food and Retail Industry Challenge Fund. It then explored how challenge funds can realise their potential both to share development funding among a broader range of development organisations, but promote more effective trust, communication, learning, partnership and innovation.

An important purpose of the workshop was to compare the evolution of challenge funds in promoting civil society and social development, as well as private sector and enterprise development.
