Profile
I research the political dynamics of public policy governance, where I work at the intersection of the disciplines of political science, political sociology and policy analysis. I specialise in researching the governance of public policy and public services in the UK and in the EU, and I have particular methodological expertise in qualitative comparative research. My undergraduate studies were in history, and I retain an abiding interest in rich, detailed empirical analysis, informed by insights from sociological theory and political economy. My current research focuses on the role of EU public policy governance, especially in migration, in shaping and entrenching social, political and economic inequalities in Europe.
I have been supervisor to a number of PhD students of my own, and from 2009 to date, I have been Director of Studies for research students in the Department, where I have enjoyed contributing to enhancing the experience of the PhD process for our students. I enjoy teaching, and my teaching always combines the evaluation of theory and its practical application to ‘real-life’ policy examples, or research projects. I have undertaken a number of other roles inside and outside the university, including being Editor (2003-2008) of the Journal of European Social Policy; Co-chair of the research group Governance and Policy Design; and founding convenor of the international Postgraduate Governance Research Network.
