Profile
Rana Jawad joined DSPS as a lecturer in social policy in January 2012 having spent a couple of years as a lecturer in social policy at the University of Kent and before that, as an ESRC post-doctoral fellow at the University of Warwick.
Her main interests are in the study of social policy and the welfare regimes of the Middle East region, with particular emphasis on the Arab and Muslim populations there; and more generally in the study of religious welfare practices and how religious identity has shaped the development of welfare provision in both OECD and non-OECD countries. These two lines of enquiry make links between social policy, international development and moral philosophy and feed into a much broader theoretical focus on the meaning of wellbeing and the mutually constitutive relationship between religious identities and capitalism.
Rana currently directs an international ESRC-funded project based on the three country case studies of Iran, Lebanon and Turkey which is seeking to develop the classification of social policy in the region of the Middle East beyond the Rentier state, and more broadly to develop a cultural approach to comparative social policy analysis. The project website will be posted here soon. Rana has acted as consultant to international agencies such as DFID and ESCWA on the subject of social policy and religion in the Middle East.
