Shamel Azmeh is a lecturer (Assistant professor) in International Development at the University of Bath. His research focuses on the interaction between international trade agreements and flows of products, capital, and workers through global production networks/value chains. He primarily focuses on the Middle East and North Africa region. In addition to his position in Bath, Shamel is a visiting fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) where He is currently leading a three years project in collaboration with the American University in Cairo on the integration of North Africa in EU-centered value chains and the "deep integration" trade agenda between North Africa and the EU.

Prior to his current position, Shamel was based at the Department of International Development at LSE for three years following the completion of his PhD at the University of Manchester. He has consulted a number of international organisations such as the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) on issue related to trade, global value chains, and industrial policy.
