Profile
I am a Marie Curie Research Officer at the Department of Social & Policy Sciences working on migration and temporary agency work in the EU.
I have previously held positions of:
- research fellow at the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) in Athens, Greece, between 2007 and 2012 and,
- research fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies of the European University Institute, in Florence, Italy in 2010-2011.
I worked as a national expert and research coordinator in several inter-disciplinary and large collaborative research projects funded by DG Research and the Fundamental Rights Agency of the European Commission, and the European Fund for the Integration of Third Country Nationals.
My undergraduate and postgraduate studies were in sociology and the political philosophy of multiculturalism and public policy respectively. They have informed my research in the mobility of migrants and migration policy in the EU. Theoretical insights from economic sociology and political economy have underpinned my empirical studies on migrants working under informal work arrangements across several labour market niches. I retain and enhance this perspective in my current research, under the acronym Jobs To Rent, the principal aim of which is to systematically explore the social processes and structures framing both the mobility of the migrant worker and the organization of work itself leading to different experiences of the agency work relationship. I do so in a comparative setting across labour markets with different settings of work (welfare, hospitality and agricultural sector) and across two EU countries, UK and Greece, characterized by different political economies and welfare regimes, experiencing different and managing differently migration flows.
Research interests
- the social regulation of labour markets, the labour process and the informal economy
- the sociology of migration, migrant socioeconomic and geographical mobility
- migration policy, the labour ,arket and social policy in the EU (more particularly in Southern Europe, Easter Europe amd the UK) and the US.
Current projects
- Jobs To Rent: Migration and Temporary Agency Work in the EU welfare, tourise and agricultural sectirs, funded by FP7-PEOPLE Marie Curie Actions-2011-IEF
