Jonathan Knight is Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Professor of Physics. He obtained BSc (Hons), M.Sc. and PhD from the University of Cape Town. He then did postdoctoral research at the École Normale Supérieure (Paris) and at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (Southampton) before moving to Bath in 1996 as Lecturer. He was appointed Senior Lecturer and then Professor in 2000. He was a Leverhulme Research Fellow in 2005/06, Director of the Centre for Photonics and Photonic Materials from 2005 to 2008, Head of Physics from 2008 to 2013 and Associate Dean (Research) for the Faculty of Science 2013 to 2015. He was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) in 2015.

His research work has focused on the behaviour of light in microstructured materials, and he has published over 250 papers in this field. His current h-index is 66. He is a named inventor on 22 patent specifications, several of which are being actively exploited. He is a frequent speaker at major photonics and telecommunications conferences in the Americas, Asia and across Europe. He was co-founder of the University of Bath spin-out company BlazePhotonics, funded with $9 million of venture capital funding, and more recently has been a regular consultant to industry. His long-standing collaboration with Fianium, a UK-based maker of lasers and laser light source, has led to several new products for their business. He is a Fellow of the Optical society of America and was awarded the Institute of Physics Optics and Photonics Division Prize 2012.
