Mark Humphriss graduated with a BA in French & Economics from Reading University. He qualified in 1994 as a Chartered Secretary and was elected Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries & Administrators in 2003.

Prior to joining the University of Bath in 2007, he worked for the Church of England in a variety of roles. This included a major review of the structures of the Church of England, working for national charity on secondment, responsibility for the Church's national budget and involvement with the 11 universities of Church of England foundation.

As University Secretary he is Secretary of the University Council and his responsibilities include the Student Immigration Service, international student recruitment, the Secretariat, the Legal Office, Equality and Diversity, emergency management, oversight of degree ceremonies and other major events, ethics, student complaints and discipline, PREVENT/consumer regulation and the Dental Centre. He chairs the Equality and Diversity and Health and Safety  Committees and as part of the senior management team is involved in a range of other matters across the University.

He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Heads of University Administration. He is a director of the Office of the Independent Adjudicator and member of its Finance Committee, Trustee of the Holburne Museum and Chair of its Higher Education Strategy Board and Vice-Chair of Designability Charity Limited.
