Martyn Whalley was born in Nottingham and from an early age, through his father, has been associated with the built environment and construction sector. A graduate of the University of Birmingham in Civil Engineering in 1975, he has worked at the University of Bath since 2001, when he was an external Project Manager for the Department of Estates. In 2004, he joined the Department as Deputy Director and was appointed Director in 2008.

Martyn's background includes consulting engineering, contracting, commercial property development and major infrastructure projects both in the UK and overseas. The projects he has been involved with over his career are immense. They include £250 million of capital works for a utility company in the 1990s, when his team was rolling out £1million a week of capital works and investment in the then recently privatised water industry. Overseas schemes include work in Tripoli and Hyderabad, India. Industrial and retail parks, major housing developments and PFI schemes are in his UK portfolio.

Martyn is passionate about whole life costing of projects and value management. Strong relationships with consultants and contractors are also paramount within his management team. He is also very concerned about the environmental impact of projects, construction activities and energy use related to the built environment. Martyn became a Chartered Environmentalist in 2004 and has been involved in many of the early SUDS schemes (Sustainable Urban Drainage Schemes) when the principles were developed in the UK.

He is a Chartered Engineer and was made a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 2012 and a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) in 2015. He has been associated with over £500m of major capital works at the University over the last 10 years.
