Learning Support Invigilation Information
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What should I do if a student doesn’t turn up?
A: If a student fails to arrive for an exam in a sole venue, you must remain in the venue for thirty minutes from the start time of the exam. If the student turns up within the thirty minutes, they may sit the exam but they lose the time they have missed. If a student in a group venue fails to turn up, it should be noted in the appropriate place on the Invigilation Certificate. If a student failing to arrive at a group venue results in there being two invigilators to one student, one of the invigilators will need to leave the exam.
Q: What should I do if a student is late for the exam?
A: As above, the invigilator should remain in the exam for the first thirty minutes, and if the student turns up within that time they may sit the exam, but will lose the time they have missed.
Q: Are students allowed to eat/drink in the exam venue?
A: Unless specified on the Invigilation Notice, students are not permitted to eat in the exam venue. However, students are permitted to take bottled water into the exam.
Q: What should I do if a student is unwell during the exam?
A: If a student feels unwell during the exam, you must report it to the Examinations Office where a decision can be taken on the best course of action. Under no circumstances should you offer a student any medication or medical advice.
Q: What should I do if there is a technical problem with a laptop/USB stick?
A: If a problem occurs with the laptop during the exam, stop the clock and bring the student and the laptop to the Examinations Office, where we will try and fix the problem or provide a replacement. Always advise the student to try and save any existing work to the hard drive. If there is a problem with saving work to the USB stick at then end of the exam, again bring the student, the laptop and the USB stick to the Examinations Office where we will try to resolve the problem.
Q: Are students allowed to take the exam paper away with them at the end of the exam?
A: Unless it is specifically mentioned on the front of the exam paper that it is not to be taken out of the venue, students are permitted to take the paper with them at the end of the exam. However, if you are at all unsure, either contact a member of the Exams Office or do not allow the paper to be taken away from the venue.
Q: What should I do if a student has a query regarding their Alternative Exam Arrangements?
A: If a student has a query relating to their Alternative Exam Arrangements (extra time, rest breaks etc) then you should contact the Exams Office who will be able to verify what arrangements should be in place for the student.
