At the start of their programme, all taught and distance learning students will be assigned a Personal Tutor who is a member of academic staff by their Department or School.
 
The Personal Tutorial System at the University of Bath is designed to:
 
  • provide you with a personalised point of contact at the University;
  • support your academic and personal development;
  • help induct you into the academic community and your academic studies;
  • help you to learn and live in the university environment and show you where to find sources of academic and welfare support.

As a student, you should meet regularly with your Personal Tutor - at least three times during your first semester, and once every semester thereafter.   Your meetings with your Personal Tutor may be integrated with academic tutorials for your programme, or they may be separate. However your meetings are arranged, you are entitled to meet with your Personal Tutor individually if you wish to, and you can contact your Personal Tutor to organise this.

To gain as much as you can from the Personal Tutorial System, you should try to develop good communications with your Personal Tutor. It is your responsibility to attend meetings with your Personal Tutor, and to them know if for any reason you are unable to attend. Bear in mind that if you don’t attend tutorials, your Personal Tutor may never know you well enough to write a more than factual reference for future job applications.    
 
Your programme handbook will provide details of how the Personal Tutorial System works in your Department or School. This will include:
 
  • the support that you can expect from your Personal Tutor;
  • what is expected of you;
  • the mechanism for you to request a change of Personal Tutor should you wish to;
  • how your Personal Tutor will help induct you into your academic studies;
  • how you can feed back about your experience of the Personal Tutorial System.
