What advice?
Become a LINC mentor
Why mentoring?
International students may face the challenges of culture shock, language barriers and different academic systems.
Many are keen to meet British students but sometimes find it hard to do so.
Life In a New Culture (LINC) mentors help new international students adapt quickly through:
- sharing experiences
- answering questions
- offering practical help (e.g. going shopping)
- introducing the opportunities available through the Students’ Union and Student Services.
How to apply
- Read the job description
- Read the person specification
- Apply online before 31 May 2013
We'll let you know if you've been successful by 1 June 2013.
Any questions? Email for more information.
Who can apply?
All British students who were educated in the UK (between the ages of 12 and 18) and have completed at least one academic year at Bath.
What qualities do I need?
Positivity
You’ll be the first point of contact for new students. By sharing your knowledge and experience of life in Bath you can help make sure their first impressions are positive.
Cultural sensitivity
Maybe you can speak another language or have lived abroad? This is a great opportunity to meet people from around the world and you’ll need to be aware of some of the challenges that students might face.
Patience
You’ll be working with students who may be feeling jetlagged or frustrated – your patience and willingness to listen will make all the difference.
Enthusiasm
We want mentors who are involved in volunteering, sports, societies, academic reps and every area of University life.
What do I need to do?
The LINC mentor programme is an intensive introduction over the summer and during the first three weeks of Semester 1. For details of what you need to do when, check the job description.
What’s in it for me?
You’ll get a certificate at the end of the programme which can be used as evidence for the Bath Award accreditation scheme. You'll also:
- Meet new friends
- Meet students from all over the world
- Enhance your CV - you’ll be offered an interactive three-hour training session covering:
- cultural awareness
- mental health first aid
- communication skills
- services available to international students.
