Unit evaluation

Have your say!

Unit Evaluation is your opportunity to tell us what you like about each of the units you take while studying here, as well as anything you feel could be improved. Your feedback is anonymous.

Evaluating all units is an integral part of our commitment to provide high-quality learning and teaching opportunities informed by your feedback and ideas.

How to take part

If you are an eligible student, you will receive an email inviting you to complete the evaluation once it is open. The length of time unit evaluations are open varies from unit to unit and from department to department.

Please remember that you and your feedback remains anonymous during the evaluation process.

Unit evaluations are straightforward and should take no more than 10-15 minutes to complete.

Evaluation questions

Unit evaluations provide the opportunity to express your overall thoughts and views on your academic unit. You will be asked a mixture of quantitative and open comment questions. Whatever the unit you are taking you will be asked the core set of questions below:

•    My understanding of the subject is increasing as a result of taking this unit
•    I find the teaching methods used in this unit are effective in helping me learn
•    Sufficient advice and support in relation to this unit is available to me
•    Overall, I am satisfied with the quality of the unit
•    It was made clear to me from the start of the unit, what I was meant to learn from it
•    It was clear to me what criteria would be used to assess my work before assessment took place
•    The type of feedback I would be receiving was clearly explained at the start of the unit
•    I received feedback in a timely manner
•    Please rate the quality of teaching on this unit
•    What would you like us to change to improve this unit?

These questions may be supplemented by additional questions appropriate to your unit agreed by your academic department in consultation with your Staff Student Liaison Committee (SSLC).

What happens to your feedback?

A summary of the outcomes of unit evaluation and the actions being taken in response should always be fed back to students in a timely manner via a specific departmental Moodle page.

In addition, each year, Directors of Studies work closely with student Academic Reps from their SSLC to develop an action plan to improve the student experience in each department. These action plans, to make us Better@Bath, are based on students' comments in surveys such as Unit and Programme Evaluation, National Student Survey, and the Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey.

If you don't take part in the evaluation

We value student feedback and would like to collect views from as many students as possible. If you do not respond to the first evaluation invitation, you may receive follow-up emails asking you to take part. We encourage you to give us your feedback to inform enhancements in the student experience.
