Lost passport or Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)

Use the information below to find out what to do if you've lost your passport or BRP.

Your passport is lost or stolen

  • You'll need to apply to your country's government (Embassy or High Commission in the country where you are now) for a replacement passport or a travel document to return home.
  • You'll need to provide a police reference as evidence that your passport has been reported missing or stolen. If you lost your passport in the UK, you can get a police reference on www.reportmyloss.com. If you're overseas, contact the local police.

If you are outside the UK

If your passport contains your full visa for the UK (a vignette in your passport for the full duration of your leave/visa) and you lose your passport or have your passport stolen, you must:

  1. Report the loss or theft of your passport to the police and by obtaining a police report
  2. Apply for a replacement passport/temporary passport at the nearest embassy for your country.
  3. Apply for a Tier 4 visa online and pay the full fee. You do not need to request a new CAS from your educational institution. If you are asked for a CAS number, simply provide your previous one. When asked to select a visa type, you should choose Other > Others > Vignette Transfer.

You can find further information in the guidance on gov.uk.

If you are inside the UK

  1. Apply for a new passport at your country's embassy, consulate or high commission.
  2. Transfer your visa to a BRP card. The Transfer Of Conditions (TOC) can take around eight weeks.

If you're inside the UK

  1. Report the loss or theft of your BRP to the police and obtain a police report/lost property report.
  2. Contact the Home Office and report your lost or stolen BRP. The Home Office will contact you within one working day to tell you what to do next.
  3. You may be advised to make a BRP-RC application for a replacement BRP card, costing £56. The Student Immigration Service can help you with this application and send it on your behalf. Please email us in the first instance. We will then arrange for you to come and see us. You will need to have completed the application form and bring in the required documents, which includes a current student status letter (request through SAMIS online).

If you're outside the UK

  1. Report the loss or theft of your BRP to the police and obtain a police report.
  2. Email the Home Office and report your lost or stolen BRP. The Home Office will contact you within one working day to tell you what to do next.
  3. Apply for a replacement BRP visa single entry costing £189 to re-enter the UK. When asked to select a visa type, you should choose Other > Others > Replacement Biometric Residence Permit.
  4. When you have returned to the UK you should apply for a replacement BRP card.

UKVI services at Visa Application Centres (VACs)

VACs offer a variety of chargeable services in addition to ordinary application services. You should check the availability of any such services at the Visa Application Centre you intend to apply at as this may enable quicker processing of your application.

Check the government's list of Visa Application Centres outside the UK.

Your lost visa is about to expire

Do not let your visa expire while waiting for a replacement passport or BRP card. If you’re in the UK and your visa is going to expire, contact an adviser. You may need to make a Tier 4 application without the passport, or withdraw your application if you're returning home.

You've received your replacement passport/visa/BRP card

Please bring it to Student Services in 4 West so that we can update our records - this is a legal requirement.
